On this safari visit, one of the oldest African montane forests is located southwest of Rwanda, adjacent to the border of Burundi in the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. It is believed that the forest is the true source of the Great River Nile because of its hilly nature, with a water stream stretching all the way into the Lake Victoria basin. Nyungwe is one of the 3 national parks in Rwanda and occupies about 970 square kilometers; the ecosystem of the forest is also supported by the dramatic Lake Kivu. The forest is home to over 400 chimpanzee individuals alongside 12 other primate species like the colobus monkeys, vervets, olive baboons, and forest buffalos and antelopes.
